In December 2000, my Grandpa was diagnosed with congestive heart failure. Five months later, he started writing this first chapter of his memoirs. After a couple pages he stopped... for open heart surgery.

Two months later he returned to his memoirs, completing Chapter 1 on September 9th. He begins his story on that same date in 1934...
